What a week…and we’re not done yet.

As most of you have probably seen, a Winter Weather Advisory in effect Friday from 6am-3pm.

Accumulations of less than an inch to one inch likely between 7am and noon for MoCo.

The National Weather Service also warns for the “potential for hazardous commuting conditions for the Friday morning commute.”

Though not much snow is expected, everything that falls will stick. This will be the type of snow that you can wipe away, but…it’s still snow.

Timing is important with this one. As of now, the expected onset is between 5-7am for places like Damascus and 7-9am for the rest of us. If things start around 9, a delay would have us out in the thick of things.

There’s not a Pencil Prediction that covers this, so as of 6:10pm it looks like everything is in play (full day of school, delay, and a day off).

I’ll be updating the free iOS MoCoSnow app with specific % for at least a delay and closure as I continue to gather information.

Here’s how it looks as of now:

Is a delay really in play because wouldn’t that just make it worse for the commute?

Not going to happen. All the busses will have dropped all the students off before it begins.
It will just become another distraction in the classroom. Look for a full day of school.:(

It seems like it will be snowing all morning, so a delay might not help much; do you think a closure can be likely?

I teach at Fairfax HS and I am really getting tired of these snow days and delays. It’s really hectic to try to plan around them (I teach Calculus – lot of curriculum to fit in before the AP exams). I’m hoping they stick to a delay… but I’m worried. Do you think that there is a chance of a closure?

There’s always a chance of closure with Fairfax. I think the delay gives them a better idea of what’s happening

Hi, I have to go to Pittsburgh tomorrow. Do you think it will be okay to go, or are there high chances of highways being messy? I’ve seen they’ve put down a lot of salt, Will I still be able to go to Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania

I don’t think it’ll be bad in our area at all. Don’t know about going north. Always use caution

Local radar model and ICON seem to indicate that what is likely to be a dusting will actually roll in later tomorrow, closer to 1:00pm than 9:00am.

    Anyone else seeing this also?

Given that Loudoun and Fairfax have both delayed tomorrow I would have expected our delay percentage to go up, In my opinion it should be more like:
    Delay: 48%
    Closure: 35%
I respect your opinion, but I suggest you update it because it is necessary (again, in my opinion)

Why did MCPS stay a full day? They should have at least 2 hour delayed mainly because of the updated Winter Weather advisory. . .Geez MCPS this is easy to decide and you still failed.
