A winter weather advisory has been issued for our area from 4am tomorrow morning until 1pm-4pm in the afternoon (depending on where you are in the county).
In the image above, courtesy of the National Weather Service, you’ll see about 1/3 of the county forecasted to get between .1-.25″ of ice accumulation.
In this image, courtesy of the National Weather Service, you’ll see that things are expected to get started between 5am-7am.
A few degrees could be the difference between a messy ice storm and a lot of cold rain. Chances are things won’t remain messy that long, but if some of these spots actually end up getting a quarter inch of ice, it’ll be bad.
If things continue until the early afternoon…a delay may not be enough.
For our first storm of the season, we welcome Fox 5’s Mike Thomas! He will offer his Pencil Prediction a little further down in this post.
Pencil Prediction by Fox 5’s Mike Thomas: 3 Pencils!
I will go 3 pencils! Maybe a slushy inch or two of snow/sleet but don’t think the roads will be awful, but at the same time I think the timing is an issue. Sleet & snow coming in just in time for the morning commute makes it a very tricky call for the schools. I could see on time, or delay, or even a close purely based on how the timing pans out. So for this first call of the season, I shall go 3 pencils!

Even if this doesn’t end up being much, the decision will likely have to be made before it even starts. Playing it safe and calling for the delay would be a good idea because then the school system can see what actually falls and how messy things get before deciding whether they want to stick with the delay or move forward to a closure (remember, a school system can never go back– delay to full day of school, etc.).
